Re: Terry Neill dies
Not only was he the last top flight manager to lose a cup final aginst a second division team, that Arsenal team also lost a second cup final four days later against Valencia i believe. Thats a pretty unenviable record.

By all accounts a good and decent man THO

RIP Terry

Re: Terry Neill dies
Just after losing the 1980 final they lost the Cup Winners Cup final that season too.
On pens to Valencia after having knocked Juventus out in the semi final.

Anyone who ends up with Issac as a 'nemesis' could cause an argument in a closed morgue.

Fascinating.

Re: Terry Neill dies
In the 70's, to get a team to three F.A. Cup Finals in a row was some achievement. To lose two out of three would have been unbearable.

Re: Terry Neill dies
Had forgotten that he was Spurs manager for a couple of seasons (appointed at 32) before Arsenal pinched him back.
Lost the 78 FA Cup final to Ipswich before beating Man U in 79 with the late Sunderland goal.
To me that just makes 1980 even better .... a very one sided 1-0 for a team from the division below against a team in their third successive FA Cup final. An immense achievement and as said John Lyall just outfoxed Neill and Arsenal tactically.

Think Arsenal were boring well before Neill & was reading his time there went downhill after he signed Lee Chapman and later the very expensive Charlie Nicholas.
As a few have said these deaths just feel like another break from links to your childhood even they werent West Ham.

RIP

I'm sure he was a nice bloke, but he was the one who put Boring into Arsenal.

Re: Terry Neill dies
Sad news. As said was synonymous with growing up and football in the late 70's/early 80's, and was 'credited' for bringing Don Howe into top flight football. he was a good pundit on Talksport also, and yes I went to his wine bar a couple of times.

RIP.

I remember him doing commentary on Capital Gold, around the same time as Sir Bobby and Jonathan Pearce.
